Artist in Residency at La Non-Maison in Aix en Provence. France.
April 01 2012 – June 30 2012
Sajeewani Hewawitharana was born in 1977, in Matara, Sri Lanka, lives and works in Colombo. Sajeewani followed a painting degree and with the assistance of her mentors, cleared her path to enter the artistic world where she has participated in several group exhibitions including ‘Imagining Peace’: Colombo Art Biennale 2009.
Sajeewani was recently invited to a residency programme in France. She was selected by the recommendation of the Founding Director of the Colombo Art Biennale – Annoushka Hempel who is frequently asked to nominate artists for international art prizes and residencies.
THE RESIDENCY was created in Aix en Provence, by Michèle Cohen, director of LA NON-MAISON, with the support of the Almayuda Foundation, so as to participate in the contemporary art development, and in order to encourage meetings. It opened in January 2011, sponsored by the photographer Bernard Plossu. It hosts international artists (photographers, curators, art critics, movie directors) for a period of one to three months. By withdrawing from their usual routine, they discover the “withdrawal space” needed for creation.
At the end of their stay, the artists bring their knowledge, their networks, and ideas, helping the residency to become a place of exchange and meetings, from which other invitations will be made, and other projects will arise, led by co-opted artists.
Work In Progress
Sanjeewani’s exhibition is scheduled to be held on the 27th of June 2012 and is her first solo exhibition. Her art works will be created using different materials such as pens, pencils, sewing on paper, safety pins, lace, beads, canvas, frames, etc.
